HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOVELY!

three years ago today i gave birth to this sweet little baby girl….she is remarkable in every way….from the moment i met her, her eyes looked into mine with the such affection….she is the same today….so very generous with her hugs & smiles…she’s been speaking in complete sentences sine the tender age of one….its disarming, her wit, her kindness, her ability to seem completely independent & utterly vulnerable at the same time…she can do everything herself or so she”ll tell you…when i call her my “baby”, she’ll look me intently  & say “mommy, i am not a baby, i’m jasmine”…and yet she’s gentle and very tolerant of my mothering…and in the evenings she melts into my body, as if she knows she’s my baby & is tired from another day of being a big girl….she can scamble eggs, wrestle with her big brother & draw perfect smiley faces…she loves to touch my skin, it keeps her calm & grounded…& when she’s sleepy, she’ll wrap herself around my arm, as if its a doll & when she sleeps, she sleeps soundly, surely gathering strenth for the adventures that await her when she arises, she is the sweetest flower in the garden, an angel with curls & secrets that whisper to my heart…..jasmine, my jasmine.

SUPPLIES YOU’LL NEED:

  • Sponge
  • Window Screening (mold)
  • Wood Frame (old picture frame can be used too) (deckle)
  • Plastic Basin/Tub (Large enough to totally immerse frame)
  • Blender/Food Processor (For making paper pulp)
  • White Felt or Flannel Fabric
  • Staples or Tacks (For tacking screen on frame)
  • Liquid starch (optional)
  • handmadepaper3

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    1. Select the pieces of paper to be recycled. You can even mix different types to create your own unique paper.

    2. Rip the paper into small bits, and place into the blender. (about half full). Fill the blender with warm water. Run the blender slowly at first then increase the speed until the pulp looks smooth and well blended. ( 30 -40 seconds) Check that no flakes of paper remain. If there are, blend longer.

    3. The next step is to make a mold. The mold, in this case, is made simply by stretching fiberglass screen (plain old door and window screen) over a wooden frame and stapling it. It should be as tight as possible.

    4. Fill the basin about half way with water. Add 3 blender loads of pulp. (the more pulp you add the thicker the finished paper will be) Stir the mixture.

    5. Now is the time to add the liquid starch for sizing.(This is not necessary but if the paper is going to be used for writing on, you should add some, the starch helps to prevent inks from soaking into the paper fibers.) Stir 2 teaspoons of liquid starch into the pulp.

Place the mold into the pulp and then level it out while it is submerged. Gently wiggle it side-to-side until the pulp on top of the screen looks even.

    6. Slowly lift the mold up until it is above the level of the water. Wait until most of the water has drained from the new paper sheet. If the paper is very thick, remove some pulp from the tub. If it is too thin, add more pulp and stir the mixture again.

    7. When the mold stops dripping, gently place one edge on the side of a fabric square (felt or flannel square). Gently ease the mold down flat, with the paper directly on the fabric. Use a sponge to press out as much water as possible. Wring the excess water from the sponge back into the large plastic tub.

    8. Now comes the tricky part. Hold the fabric square flat and slowly lift the edge of the mold. The wet sheet of paper should remain on the fabric. If it sticks to the mold, you may have pulled to fast or not pressed out enough water. It takes a little practice. You can gently press out any bubbles and loose edges at this point.

    9. Repeat the steps above, and stack the fabric squares on a cookie sheet. Save one fabric square to place on the top of the stack to cover the last piece of paper. Use another cookie sheet to press the remaining water out of the stack. (do this outside or in the bathtub, it can make a mess)

    10. After you press the stack, gently separate the sheets. They can be dried by hanging on a clothesline or laying them out on sheets of newspaper. When they have dried peel them off the fabric and voila! you have paper!

this is a great way to teach little ones about recycling & when your paper is dry you can draw or paint on it…handmade paper would make super sweet save the dates for a wedding or birthday party too!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETIE!

six years ago today i gave birth to my sweet little son….i remember when the doctor told me i was having a little boy…i was so happy & yet a bit concerned….what did i know about boys?? how could i raise a man?? yet as they placed this beautiful boy into my arms, my heart melted around him & i knew he would teach me everything i would need to know….he is miraculous….funny & strong….he can play endlessly in the dirt & loves to curl up in my lap and touch a single strand of my hair….he does it with such gentle indifference, as if it belongs to him….i secretly think he’ll fall in love with a girl with long dark hair…he’ll just feel at home with her….and i will smile & always remember the boy who absently reached for my hair to twirl in his fingers….his secret’s safe with me….i love to watch him run like the wind & explain the incredible journeys his toy cars go on…he has taught me everything i need to know about boys & more…his heart is full of emotions that his mind doesn’t always understand…but they are there, quietly, distinctly beneath the surface…my little sweet prince.

    icecreamcupcakes1

ice cream cupcakes make everyone smile….this adorable idea was suggested by my sister while i was planning my oldest’s birthday party….the kids loved the them & treated them like ice cream cones…

    icecreamcupcakes2

not only were these cupcakes adorable, they were also scrumptious & easy to make….

    ICE CREAM CUPCAKES

    ice cream cones
    M&M’s
    cupcakes
    frosting
    sprinkles
    candles

be sure to get the flat bottom cones so you can stand them up….put some M&M’s (or any little treat you like) in the bottom of the cones….fill it up about an inch or so (this will be a surprise to everyone once they get down to the bottom of the cone)….then take a frosted cupcake and turn it upside down on top of the cone….the frosting acts like glue, so the cupcake stays in place….then simply frost the rest of the cupcake…when you are finished you’ll be surprised how much it looks like a real ice cream cone (we added sprinkles & candles)…get creative & have fun…they’d be super cute at a wedding too!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY!

twelve years ago today i gave birth to a beautiful baby girl….as i watch the lanky young women who likes to make herself breakfast in the morning & casually curl up on the couch, i can hardly believe she’s the same person…her eyes are the same….i can remember so many little moments we’ve shared….like still images in my mind….fevers & scraped knees….giggles & first steps….the way she used to say “i love you too much”…”too” instead of “so”…she confused the two words in such a lovely way….motherhood is so humbling….she is so much like me & yet so much her own person at the same time…and oh so sweet….i long to shield her from the broken heart she’ll surely face at some point in the years to come…but i also know how having your heart broken adds richness & thoughtfulness to your life….i don’t want her to miss anything….or be afraid….but how i wish i could absorb her sadness & simply show her how perfect she is in her imperfection…and always has been….i miss the baby she was, love the little girl she is & can’t wait to meet the woman she’ll become….so as i light the  12 candles on her cake & watch her laugh with her friends, i feel lucky….lucky that she made me a mother….lucky that her grey blue eyes still smile at me….lucky to love her “too” much….xoxo
