Friendship is a form of generally considered to be closer than association, although there is a range of degrees of intimacy in both friendships and associations and friendship is a feeling of one to another person. Friendship and association are often thought of as spanning across the same continuum & are sometimes viewed as weaknesses. The study of friendship is included in the fields of sociology, social psychology, anthropology, philosophy, and zoology. Various academic theories of friendship have been proposed, among which are social exchange theory, equity theory, relational dialectics, and attachment styles.

Value that is found in friendships is often the result of a friend demonstrating the following on a consistent basis:

  • The tendency to desire what is best for the other
  • Sympathy and empathy
  • Honesty, perhaps in situations where it may be difficult for others to speak the truth, especially in terms of pointing out the perceived faults of one’s counterpart
  • Mutual understanding and compassion; ability to go to each other for emotional support
  • Enjoyment of each other’s company
  • Trust in one another
  • Positive reciprocity — a relationship is based on equal give-and-take between the two parties.
  • The ability to be oneself, express one’s feelings and make mistakes without fear of judgement.

this very thorough definition of FRIENDSHIP (a la WIKIPEDIA) is, altough informative, it does not really begin to scratch the surface of the true elements of friendship….i mostly used to think of friendship as something you formed in your youth & carried with you into adulthood…i have been very pleasantly surprised over the past few years by some of the remarkable friendships i have developed as a more mature  & perhaps fully developed (ummm) grown up…one of the most beautiful grown up friendships i have been blessed with is with my incredible & inspirational friend HOLLYE…she in spite of growing through a pretty rough year has the incredible ability to be positive…truly positive…she is always looking for the SILVER LININGS in her life…on the darkest days she somehow has the ability to admire the color of the dark sky…i have found her outlook on life to be absolutely infectious…i find myself on hard days not only looking for SILVER LININGS but asking myself what would HOLLYE do??…for those of you who know what my SON’s be going through recently this is a gift beyond measure…when i feel sad or stressed or blah, i try to look around & see what i have to be grateful for…so today (for every foreseeable sunday in the future) in am devoting sunday’s to SILVER LININGS…today’s SILVER LINING is in honor of HOLLYE who has helped me find good where i thought none existed…she introduced me to truffle oil (seriously how did i not know about this-it is nectar from the gods) & to hiking when you would way rather sit on the couch & feel sorry for yourself…she’s taught me to laugh, belly laugh in moments that would in some circles require more seriousness…she is my SILVER LINING…i wish everyone a beautiful sunday…count your blessings…reach out to your friends…& if you are having a hard day, reach out & see if you can’t find a good friend or a SILVER LINING in your midst…may your day be full of sweetness…xoxo

Oh Elizabeth, this is a wonderful wonderful idea! I absolutely love it.

At WPPI, I was the one who's husband had had the stroke and finding those silver linings are one of the hardest things I've been trying to find in life. Some days it's easier than others....

I pray for your sweet son constantly and am glad that you have Hollye AND have discovered truffle oil!

    With love, Kathy
