This year, A Soolip Wedding, is proud to highlight the couture bridal gowns of Claire Pettibone featuring her, Spirit of the Night, Spring 2011 Collection.  “It was a joy to revisit the effervescent creatures that inspired this season’s collection. Luminescent wings, drops of dew on a rose, the colorful glow of the sun dissolving into the moon. Glittering sequins, beads, pearls and crystals dazzle and sparkle. An ethereal wedding gown in moon-lit gold and spun silver, shimmers between reality and another world. Night settles in the forest, the moon rises, and the fairies come out to dance and play,” comments Pettibone on her 2011 collection. (I adore CLAIRE PETTIBOONE & a SOOLIP wedding)

and this past week it was me…literally…

for the first time since i created KISS THE GROOM i have not posted for almost a week….i have always been an avid juggler…balancing motherhood and my love for photography, but this week i met my tipping point…in addition to my usual load of various odds & ends i was waist deep in the energy of WPPI…thank you to everyone who came to hear me speak & for all of you who took the time to email me directly, thank you so much…then to top it off, i am in the middle of fulfilling a dream…i am writing a book (with the endless help & support of JACQUELINE TOBIN of PHOTO DISTRICT NEWS)…we finished the first draft yesterday…it has been signed, sealed & shipped to our publisher…and i am reflecting on the aftermath of it all…so today i sit, in bed, surrounded by my children (who somehow inexplicably welcome me with open arms, no matter how consumed with work i have been) and i feel so grateful…grateful to those of you who shared WPPI with me…grateful to photography for taking me down this glorious windy road of life…to my sweet husband for supporting me every step of the way & for my children who always want to cuddle….and for those of you who keep coming here, wondering why i haven’t posted in so long…well, i’m back…and i have alot of little insights and inspirations to share…may you enjoy your sunday…i plan to watch the OSCARS & all the lovely fashion….some times doing nothing is the most wonderful thing in the world…xoxo

The secret to this cake is buying the best peaches possible.
I wait every year for Prima Peaches to come in season.  They are
so addictively delicious.  I sauté the peaches in butter and a
little butter and sugar so there are fresh peaches on
top of the cake as well as inside it.

For Peaches:

1 pound sliced peaches (about 3 cups) for inside of cake.
Additional peaches will be needed for top of cake.

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

a pinch of kosher salt or sea salt

For the Cake:

1 1/2 sticks of butter, softened

1 1/2 cups sugar

4 eggs, at room temperature

3 cups unbleached white flour

1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt or sea salt

1 1/2 cups sour cream

1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups cooked peaches (note:  the three cups of peaches will cook down to about 1 1/2 cups.
Reserve some peaches for the top of the cake or just cook more.  The more peaches the better!
Also remember to reserve the liquid from the cooked peaches for the frosting.

For the Frosting:

2 8-ounce block of cream cheese, softened

2 sticks of unsalted butter

2 1-pound box of powdered sugar

1/4 cup of peach syrup (liquid after you cook the peaches)

For the Shards of Sugar (to garnish additional peaches and to garnish top of cake)

1 cup Sugar

For the peaches: Heat a large skillet to medium high heat.  Add butter and peaches.  Sprinkle with sugar.  (if the peaches are not naturally sweet you may need more sugar.  The peaches I use are very sweet and only need a little sugar)  Add ground ginger and a pinch of salt.  Set aside.

For the Cake: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Butter and flour 2 8-inch-round cake pans.  Set aside.

In a mixing bowl cream together the butter and the sugar until light and fluffy.  Add the eggs one at a time, mixing them completely into the butter mixture after each addition.

In a separate bowl combine all of the remaining dry ingredients:  flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.  Mix or sift together well.  Add the dry ingredient mixture alternately with the sour cream.  Stir in the vanilla extract.

Fold in 1 1/2 cups of the cooked peaches into the cake batter.  Divide batter evenly between cake pans.  Baked for 40 to 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.  Remove cakes from oven and let cool for 10 minutes. Then invert onto cooling racks to finish cooling.

Make the Frosting: It is probably best to make the frosting in two batches unless you have a really big bowl.  So put one block of cream cheese, one stick of butter and one box of cream cheese in a mixing bowl and mix until well blended.  Mix in reserved peach syrup from your cooked peaches.  Then make another batch exactly like it.

Make the burnt sugar shards: Prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.  In a large stainless steel saucepan, place the sugar.  Heat over medium high heat until sugar begins to melt and brown.  Do not stir.  Tilt the pan if you need it to melt more evenly.  As soon as the sugar is a beautiful amber brown color pour it onto the parchment paper lined sheet tray.  Slightly tilt the pan so it spreads around.  It should harden immediately as it cools.   When it is completely hard break it into shards by either hitting it with a mallet or dropping the tray so the sugar cracks.

Frost the cake.  Just before presenting place more sautéed peaches on top of the cake for garnish.  Place some of the sugar shards on top of the peaches.  Garnish around the cake with peach halves and quarters and piles of burnt sugar.

“I don’t remember when I fell in love with letterpress stationery, but always knew
it was in the cards for me. On the eve of my 25th birthday, my quarter-life crisis
prompted me to take the leap. My main objective was to create a collection of stationery
that was modern, minimalistic, and smart. Using a printing technique from the 15th century,
simplistic design philosophy, and only the finest papers and inks….

Our mission is to draw attention to the beautiful things in life,
while preserving our earth…one letterpressed note at a time.”

jillian creator of GIG PRESS on her wedding day

in the spirit of love & life & KISS THE GROOM & valentine’s day….
i asked the 3 talented designers to share a personal KISS & TELL story….

myra’s kiss & tell….

The day that Matt and I were married was truly an extraordinary day. We were blessed with having our loved ones near, lucky to have perfectly warm weather, and thankful for having each other. I didn’t think that I would be the bride that would get overly emotional during the ceremony, but I felt my knees get weak while facing my future husband and struggled to hold the tears back. I really don’t remember much of anything that was said during the ceremony but I mostly remember the flood of emotions and those reciprocated by my better half. When it came time for us to kiss, I recall thinking that this was really the “first” kiss ever. It would be the kiss that would signal our lives together as husband and wife. After we kissed, I remember smiling ear to ear as we were announced as husband and wife and I’m happy to say that Matt and I still flirt and kiss over 3 years later.

breanne’s kiss & tell….

“It was new years eve, and there were lots of people there. I had a crush on him for as long as I could remember.  It had been a week since our first date and I hadn’t heard from him since. I live in a small town and everyone I knew was crammed in an old rusted out shop on a cold foggy night on the outskirts of town…..Popping champange and trying to keep warm. I was wearing gold sequins from head to toe so he couldn’t miss me in the crowd….the countdown started…. 10……7……he makes his way towards me…..3…..2……1….it was sweet, soft and sexy….. and it went on and on and on…..a perfect start to the new year and the rest of my life….”

jillian’s kiss & tell….

“our first married kiss…  i look at photos, and i’m reminded of exactly how it felt…i pray i never forget the feeling!!  the all to short moment was filled with so much joy and excitement.  my heart was fluttering…and i remember trying so hard to commit the moment to my memory forever.  it was so romantic, and sweet enough for the world to see.  it truly was a taste of what was to come…of what our life would be like as mr. & mrs.  i cannot believe it’s almost been one year…. wedded bliss…time flies when you’re in love…”
